They laughed when he said he’d score high on the SAT Essay, but when his scores came in…
On the first day of class, my new student Aaron with blond hair tucked under his red baseball cap and a scowl on his face turned in his 2 paragraph sat essay for me to score. It only took me about 60 seconds to read it and score it a 2 out of 12–poor indeed. A month later grinning from ear to ear he turned in another essay filled out front and back–this time it took me the whole 3 minutes to score. It was a perfect 12!
How did he do this? Well, it wasn’t as hard as it sounds. First, I showed him how to understand the sat essay prompts properly using my prompt disection strategy. Once he had it his essays were finally on topic and written to one consistent point of view.
Second, I showed him my reverse writing strategy to create the examples needed for the body of his essay. And finally he learned how to write powerful paragraphs using my 4-point paragraph system. His writing improved daily and easily and in just four weeks his writing abilities were hard to believe if you’d seen that first essay. He went on to score an 11 on his SAT essay and get a 2200 overall–not bad for someone who started out at the bottom of his class.
